Sorry It's taken me so long to write a new journal and answer your notes.
Hopefully this group wont be so inactive anymore because I would like to have some extra admins here. I think I'm going to take two for now (first come, firt serve). I need someone who will keep up with favorites submittions, come up with contest ideas, answer joining notes, and help maintain the journal. The new admins will pretty much have the same jobs I do.
Please junp on this! This community and growing fast, and I cant do it alone.

New book by `Wicked' author to be 3rd in series
It will deal with views of what courage is
By Katie Byard
Beacon Journal staff writer
Before Wicked was a Tony-award winning musical, it was a popular adult novel -- a prequel of sorts to L. Frank Baum's beloved The Wonderful Wizard of Oz that tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the West from her point of view.
Novelist Gregory Maguire will speak Thursday at the Akron-Summit County Public Library's Main Event Speaker Series. He spoke last week from his home in Massachusetts.
Q: What are you writing now, about a year after the release of``Son of a Witch,'' a spin-off of ``Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West?''
A: I answer that question in a different way every time. I mean, it's a little bit like asking somebody if they're pregnant. You want to be three months pregnant before you announce it. However, I am ``with book,'' and indeed I'm supposed to work on it today as soon as I finish this interview. It's called A Cowardly War.
Q: What's it about?
A: A book for me is a real exploration. Indeed, I write fiction to find out where I stand on major issues. So this book will be about the differing moralities... among soldiers, for one, and diplomats, for another... about decisions to wage war. That's what I think it will be about. Once I get into it, I will find out.
Q: Does this one also involve Oz?
A: Yes. It's the third in what I am now calling the Wicked Cycle... One of the main characters is the Cowardly Lion.
Q: In ``Wicked,'' the Wicked Witch of the West is not so wicked after all. How cowardly will the Cowardly Lion be?
A: I don't know what I'll find. That's part of the fun of writing. I don't know that I'll find if the Cowardly Lion is less cowardly, or more cowardly, or cowardly in a different way.
Q: You have said your writing is inspired by current events. Is this so with the new book?
A: ``Son of a Witch'' is definitely inspired by the photographs out of Abu Ghraib. But the new book, I suppose, is kind of launched on the tension of our national debate about whether we ought to be in Iraq or not, what constitutes moral behavior in Iraq 2006, given that we're there. That's a question that I don't have an answer for. I don't think we should have gone in, but given that we're there, what is the correct thing to do -- for ourselves, for the Iraqis, for the soldiers and the international community?
Q: I understand you journal -- perhaps daily?
A: Not daily, because I have small children. One cannot do anything daily with small children except weep with exhaustion.
Q: Tell me about your journaling.
A: I try every day to notice something unique about the day in which I'm living. It may be the news, it may be some obscure bit of natural history, like a spider web on a porch light. It might be an understanding about my children's development.... I try to recognize the uniqueness of daily life.... If you demand of yourself to write, then you're demanding of yourself to notice your life. You don't want to let life slip by unnoticed. It's too rare and precious. That's the real reason I write. Not to tell stories, but to be invested in my life while I have it.
Q: You also write children's books. Will you name just one or two books that are must-reads for children?
A: I think the best American children's novel of the last century is Charlotte's Web. It is just about flawless and like great fiction by Tolstoy or George Elliot, it is about everything important in life. It begs no important matter -- morality, love, friendship, nature, transcendence.
For younger children, I might say Where the Wild Things Are. These might be obvious answers, but these books are classics because they do the job.
Q: I read that soon after ``Son of a Witch'' was released that you didn't think it would be made into a musical. What's your thinking now?
A: I still don't. Nobody has approached me about it, put it that way. Perhaps one musical in a career is enough.
Q: Halloween is upon us and you no doubt are passing along your fondness for make-believe to your three pre-teen children. How are they going to dress up for Halloween?
A: In standard drugstore-issue, commercially made costumes. They want none of my inebriated imagination. They want stock-issue NASCAR costume, ninja costume and fairy godmother costume -- and they got it.... Like all kids, they want to fit in. They don't want to stand out -- even on Halloween.''
